Take a boxing training and coaching experience as part of a volunteer holiday, a career break overseas or a boxing gap year and join a boxing training placement in Africa. Work with junior boxers and help them thrive in the game they love whilst also giving you the chance to experience boxing in African gyms, raise your fitness levels and gain a deep insight into African boxing.
Boxing in Ghana
Ghanaians have an intense passion for boxing and it is perhaps Ghana's most popular sport after football. This boxing placement will allow you to experience this passion firsthand through training with highly accomplished African fighters, some of whom have fought and won at Commonwealth standard. The emphasis with this placement is not so much on your coaching ideas, although any input will be welcomed, but rather on your personal development as you train and befriend some of Ghana's top athletes. By doing so, you will gain a much deeper insight into the world of the West African boxer.
This is a fantastic placement to get involved with boxing at all levels. Whether you're coaching up-and-coming talent or training alongside the gritty fighters at a local African gym, your mental and technical understanding of the sport will advance dramatically. Furthermore, having experienced a whole new way of life in the boxing world during your gap year, career break or sports activity holiday, you are sure to return home with some extremely close and well-respected friends.
Your Boxing Training and Coaching Placement
The vast majority of Ghana's boxers come from a two square-mile area of the capital city, Accra . There are over 26 gyms in this region that train talented youngsters with a burning desire for a better life, pushing themselves to the peak of their ability. However, although the passion never fades, the facilities and funding are very limited. It is these gyms that will welcome you as a fellow boxer.
Your Boxing Training and Coaching Role
You will be able to get a real taste of the Ghanaian boxing culture while having the opportunity to improve your own fitness and fighting skills. Although we welcome experienced trainers and fighters, there is no expectation for you to have a vast knowledge of boxing and training techniques. There are many experienced Ghanaian coaches who can offer you support and guidance in this area. It is up to you as to how involved they want to become with the running of training sessions and fitness programmes. If the timing is right, you will also have the opportunity to get involved with the organisation, promotion and running of an event, in partnership with one of Ghana's leading promoters.
Although the focus is on your own personal development, you may have the chance to make a difference to the lives of the youngsters who train at the gyms. Many of Ghana's young fighters pin their life's hopes on turning professional, despite the fact that most will never make the grade. You could therefore find yourself acting as a mentor or friend to open their minds to opportunities outside of the gym.
Gap Year Boxing in Ghana
Training and coaching in boxing on a boxing gap year is fantastic way to experience a boxing gap year abroad. A boxing gap year will let you enjoy gap year travel in Ghana while sharing your passion for boxing with other gap year sports volunteers and young Ghanaian boxers.
