Community Work with Orphans in Ghana
In many Developing World countries, there are high numbers of orphans and abandoned children. Ghana is no exception and lack of government funding prevents the provision of the necessary care reaching these children. You can therefore make a real difference to the lives of orphans in Africa by working alongside local staff on this gap year and career break care work project, providing the support and attention that so many are deprived of.

Your Care Work Role
You will be based at a combined school and orphanage based in the capital, Accra. Few of the children who attend the school live at the orphanage (located next door to the school) and the orphans range from newborn to 16 years old. The teaching staff are often overworked and therefore welcome any help that can be given. Working as a teacher's assistant in the school and a carer in the orphanage provides the staff with invaluable support and often frees-up their time to give the children the one-to-one attention they need. And being a fluent English speaker will mean you can help in English lessons to give the children a valuable skill and added confidence.

You will also require a lot of creativity during your placement as lessons can be unpredictable and the needs of each child are unique. You will face daily challenges but the rewards are great as you develop your own teaching methods for each and every child. You should also be prepared for joining in with games and other fun exercises, often geared towards giving the children the chance to express themselves independently. It is also likely that you will be able to get involved with manual work such as repairing and painting the classrooms and school buildings.
