Hockey in Ghana
Hockey is a rapidly growing sport in Ghana and is proving extremely popular with school teams and major clubs across the country. Many young Ghanaians are eager to play the game but there are few opportunities to so. This hockey coaching placement will allow you to pass on your playing and coaching knowledge and, most importantly, it will enable children to take part in a fun, recreational activity they are keen to play.

Your Hockey Volunteer Placement
You will work closely with a number of hockey clubs in the capital, Accra, who openly welcome volunteers to run and organise young teams. Hockey volunteers can contribute massively to training and coaching and are welcomed to improve the standard of play across a variety of skill levels and ages. If you have had experience playing yourself or attended training sessions in your home country, you will be able to make a significant impact to this emerging sport.

Your Hockey Coaching Role
Volunteer coaches are assigned to established clubs in the capital and will be placed alongside the head coaches who work there. With their support, you will be in charge of introducing and running 'grass roots' training schemes for the children in the area. These projects attract a lot of interest and the young athletes will be extremely keen to learn from whatever insight you can bring to the game. They will also love the opportunity to play sport in a structured environment with the attention and guidance from a Western 'coach'. You will then organise small tournaments between the youth teams, which are always great fun for both the players and the coaches.

From the clubs, you may be invited to go to local schools to implement sports outreach projects. Here you can introduce similar hockey programmes for the children to take part in. The hockey project is a truly unique and rewarding experience. The advantage of coaching a developing sport is that the children are so grateful for the time you spend with them and, although you may lack confidence to begin with, you will soon realise that you can offer something of great value.
