Teach English to Ghanaian children as part of a gap year or career break and educate people that have a serious hunger to learn. Bring with you fresh teaching ideas and see how captive Ghanaians are at wanting to learn English. You can also get the chance to teach other subjects depending on what you feel able to offer.

Education in Ghana
In comparison to 'western' standards, the quality and breadth of education in Developing World countries is usually limited. Ghana is no exception and most of the schools are under-funded and under-staffed. However, as a teaching volunteer on a gap year, career break or volunteer holiday, your contribution will make a significant difference to the level of education available to many young Ghanaians.

Your Teaching Volunteer Placement
Ghanaian schools operate at three key stages and there are a number of different levels at which you can teach: Senior Secondary School, Junior Secondary School and Nursery. With the younger children, you will have the opportunity to teach English as a foreign language, helping your students develop their fluency and conversational confidence. For the older children, English skills are stronger so there will be ample opportunity to teach a broad range of subjects. The current syllabus covers English Language, English Literature, Math, Science, French, IT, RE, Design, Construction and Agricultural Studies. There are also opportunities to teach drama, journalism or PE. Furthermore, you will have a chance to teach extracurricular activities of your own choice. There are countless opportunities to take advantage of and you will leave your school having had a truly eye-opening experience.

Your Teaching Role
You will be placed in a local school and be responsible for teaching students English and/or other subjects. Your role will be to offer inspiring and exciting lessons that will improve the literacy, numeracy and communication skills of your class. Help with issues such as lesson planning, discipline and cultural courtesies will be available from a number of sources, including school teachers, the in-country staff and other volunteers. However, it is important to remember that your role is intended to be as independent and self-supported as possible. This will enable you to develop greater self-confidence in your own organisational skills. In addition to regular class-teaching, you will be encouraged to introduce your own ideas and get involved with extra-curricular activities which might include art and design, drama, music, sport or the production of a school newspaper. Above all, we want to give you the flexibility to decide how you can best contribute to the school environment and education in Ghana.
