We offer our incredible Ski and Snowboard Instructor Courses in two of the most sought after destinations in the Canadian Rockies. Each of the awesome towns that we run our courses in are famed for being a true part of the snow culture, that Canada has gained worldwide recognition for. We currently operate in two distinct locations in Canada, each offering the same amazing courses, in a different setting with different benefits that will attract a different type of person.

Fernie, British Columbia
Fernie is top destination for skiers and snowboarders, and is regularly the most popular destination for course participants of all ages and levels of experience. Fernie is famed for its outstanding powder, steeps and trees to get your heart racing, and a beautiful laid back culture due to the un-commercial, friendly nature of this dazzling ski town.
• Fernie regularly has the highest level of snow fall in Canada, with an average of 29ft per season, which is the reason that world famous Fernie powder!
• Fernie has the largest single resort ski area in the Canadian Rockies, and also the longest vertical so hold onto your hats!
• Fernie has won a host of accolades, such as Top North America Resort, North America’s Coolest Town, and Best Ski Town in Canada.

Banff, Alberta
Banff is a fantastic, lively ski town which is nestled deep in a beautiful national park setting in Alberta. Making for some stunning scenery as well as some of the top slopes in Canada, this fun-loving town is truly alive. Banff is made up of 3 separate ski resorts, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Norquay, and combined these 3 resorts make up the largest ski area in Canada.
• On a Changing Worlds instructor course in Banff you will have the unique opportunity to train at all 3 ski resorts, making for a hugely diverse and exciting experience.
• Due to the 3 resorts, Banff has a lively, party town atmosphere with lots of fun and interesting things going on.
• The drinking age in Alberta province is 18yrs+, which makes Banff an excellent location for gap year travellers looking to enjoy a bit of freedom and to let their hair down on their time off.

Fernie, British Columbia
Accommodation in Fernie is located at a purpose built 40+ bedroom ski lodge in the heart of the town. Participants taking part in the instructor course in Fernie will have their own queen size bed in a comfortable 2 or 4 person bedroom. All the rooms are en-suite, and all participants have access to a range of awesome facilities, such as restaurant, lounge, kitchen, bar, movie room, games room, sauna, and a ski lodge would not be complete without a hot tub for relaxing those aching limbs after a long day on the slopes.

Banff, Alberta
The accommodation in Banff is located in hotels and hostels in the town centre. Being centrally located the accommodation provides easy access to the local amenities in the town centre, and also provides a great base for nights out and partying with your fellow participants. Participants on the instructor course in Banff will be placed together in either the hotel or the neighbouring hostel, so you will never be on your own in this buzzing ski town. You will be sharing a dorm style/shared room, with a range of facilities and amenities close to hand including, WiFi, kitchen, lounge, swimming pool and laundry facilities.

3 Week Course Structure
Week 1 - Settle in to your new surroundings, explore the area, meet your professional instructors and build on your skiing or snowboarding skills

Skiing in Canada Canada Mountains Cycling in Canada

Where is Canada?
Canada is vast! This is clear when looking at a map but even more obvious when travelling in Canada (after driving all day you could still be in the same province/state). With such a large land mass, it comes as no surprise that the environment varies widely depending on which area of Canada you are travelling in.

Sitting in between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, Canada shares a long land border with the USA in the South, and Alaska (US) and Greenland in the North. Forests and mountains feature heavily throughout the country, with relatively flat prairies and plains dotted around. There is much ice and tundra in the Arctic North, with only a few communities choosing to live there and these people seriously know how to brace a cold winter, with tempartures known to have dropped to a whopping -63 °C (-81.4 F).

Although a sparsely populated country (only 35 million in a land cover 9,984,670 km²), the cities of Canada are well-populated and built-up, although not overly crowded or busy. Expect skyscrapers, malls, the odd traffic jam and all the modern conveniences expected of contemporary cities. Parks, trees and public-art beautify most cities in Canada, and provide sweet relief to travellers and locals alike. Smaller communities exist in more remote areas, with quaint villages on both coasts relying on fishing, tourism and agriculture. Expect a slower pace of life, low-density housing and much less buzz than when in the city. Canada has it all and must be put on your wish list of places to visit.

Sport in Canada
Canadians love their sports and the winter is consumed by activities which take place on either snow or ice thanks to the country’s consistently cold weather and reliable snowfall. This makes it an ideal location to train as a snow sports instructor and enjoy the best in professional training on some of Canada’s exceptional slopes. The most difficult decision you’ll face is whether you’re a skier or a snowboarder!

Gap Year and Career Break in Canada
A gap year, student holiday or even a career break in Canada will take you to some truly amazing places. The country is so vast which can see you travelling to remote and stunning scenery. Spend your Canadian gap year or career break getting involved with the country and it's locals by taking part in a Sporting Opportunities trip, giving you the chance to visit a great country whilst doing something sporty whilst you are there.

“For every weekend I was there a new experience would light up my senses. And the friends I have made there will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Simon Willis

Air Canada Canada Flag Niagra Falls

There are quite a few things to consider and to organise before you travel to your chosen destination to take part in your trip or tour with us.

Flights and Insurance
Flights and insurance are not included on your placement which means you will have to arrange them before you leave. But don't panic, this is simpler than you may think! To make life much easier for you, we offer a free, personal booking service through our chosen flights and insurance partner – StudentUniverse, part of Flight Centre. They will guide you every step of the way.

Please only use this service here and do not go into one of their branches as this can complicate things for us.

Browse or book flights using our search engine. Click here to access it.

Alternatively you can call them on 03300 585032 and mention you are considering or are going away with Sporting Opportunities and let them do the hard work. They will also be able to provide you with adequate travel insurance.

Travelling after your trip with us? Need a round-the-world ticket? Not a problem... just discuss this with them too.

Why are flights not included?
By not including flights in our trips and tours, it avoids us having to pass on unnecessary admin charges to you. This keeps the cost of your trip lower and also means you have the freedom to search around for the lowest fares and most flexible tickets that fit your travel plans. It also means you can benefit from the expertise of our preferred partner.

What happens when flights and insurance are booked?
When you book any trip with us, you will gain access to our online Travel Centre, personalised for you. In here you will have all the information about your trip and how to plan for it, including the contact details for our in-country team and address you will be staying at.

There are also some forms we need you to complete before you depart, covering areas like your dietary requirements, next-of-kin, medical information, flight arrivals details and more.

Do I really need travel insurance?
We take the safety of our travellers very seriously. You must therefore book adequate travel insurance before you come away with us – you simply won’t be able to participate in your trip or tour if you don’t. Although policies vary, your insurance must include emergency medical expenses, personal accident cover, and repatriation. We also recommend that you book baggage, personal liability and cancellation cover.

Some of the countries where we work will require you to have a visa. We provide guidance for this against the Trip Summary tab so you can check whether your nationality requires it. If a visa is required we will provide a letter of invitation, if the embassy requests this, as well as all the relevant information you will need to complete the visa application process. This information is provided after you book with us. With all visa applications it is important that you have sufficient space available in your passport for the relevant visas required for your travels, and that your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned date of return.

Please note we have no control over the issuing of visas and this is at the embassies discretion. We will help wherever possible though.

At least 6 – 8 weeks before your chosen travel date you should visit your local GP or Nomad Travel Clinic to discuss your vaccination and medication requirements. Your medical professional will be able to advise you of any recommended and required vaccinations for your chosen destination(s).You should inform your doctor of all of your destination countries, and what activities you plan on doing, and in which regions you plan to stay while you are there, as different regions and activities have different health risks in some countries.

Some destination countries will require you to produce a certificate of vaccination in order to enter the country, so be sure that you understand any vaccination requirements for your chosen destination, so that you do not have any issues when passing through customs.

Above all you should make sure you are well prepared for your travels, so that you have the best experience possible whilst overseas!

We will ask you to provide some key information to help us create the best overseas experience for you, such as medical and dietary requirements, any previous language lessons you have done, and what you’re hoping to get out of your time abroad.
